The Marquis of Kexley has a problem. He is exceedingly rich, exceedingly handsome, and exceedingly clever. Yet, he is completely terrified of women and disgusted at the very thought of marriage. Much of the book is devoted to hammering these points home repeatedly. Strangely, this fear does not extend to married women; he loves to sleep with any and all who are willing, and he feels no regret. Single women and widows, however, are all gold-diggers and are only worthy of his disdain, although he sleeps with some of them, too. We are told of his many discarded women who weep and send pleading letters, and he delights in ignoring them. Is this sexy? Is he an "alpha male"? I was very confused. There are numerous scenes of him going to enormous lengths to flee from women, rather than just tell them, "Sorry, I'm not interested." In one scene, he slept with a sweet, young widow. He suspected that she wanted marriage and had "feelings of revulsion" at the thought, so he concocted a story about a sick relative and fled on his yacht from England to Scotland. Despite his treatment of women and his proclivity for sleeping with all of the married ones, he unbelievably has many male friends, including one, the Prince of Wales, who tries to set him up with a young woman. Fortunately, the Marquis finds her beneath his standards. In Scotland, he encounters a wicked woman from his past who is now married to an old family friend. Thus begins a convoluted extortion plot involving the Marquis, the wicked woman, and the woman's virginal stepdaughter. I'll spare you the rest. I just can't get behind a hero who has such hatred for women, and I'm surprised anyone would find him to be even minimally appealing. As if all this wasn't bad enough, the writing is awful - very childish and awkward to read.

I can't believe how bad this book was. I am a huge Regency Romance fan, but this book... There are no words to describe how much I disliked the Marquis! Usually, the most interesting character in a Regency Romance book is the hero. In this one, he is so immature, coward, BORING! He is supposed to be one of the most admirable man in the ton, but I guess the only reason is because he is "handsome" and rich.Arrrgghh, I hate when he complained that all the mothers and debutantes were looking for was marriage. Of course that is the only reason in Regency Era! What else were the women supposed to do? In an era where career did not exist for them, nor independence. Of course, the women were good enough to become his mistresses, but when they wanted to be something more serious, RUN, MARQUIS, RUN! Because that what he does, he RUNS AWAY all the time, the coward!I am going to create a new shelf just for this book: TERRIBLE.

It has been years since I read any of Barbara Cartland's books, perhaps as many as thirty. I got this one for free. I did rem ember her doe eyed innocent heroines who end up marrying the titled suitor, often ignorant to his actual station. This one rather takes the cake... The Marquis is involved with a widow... when the widow suggests that the marquis might marry her, he first pretends to be asleep... then, later, enlists the prince's help so that he can... wait for it... run AWAY from her. No, he doesn't politely break things off, he runs away to Scotland to escape her, hoping that she'll just 'figure out' that he doesn't wish to have anything else to do with her. What a cad.

Lordy! I haven't read Cartland novel since I was about nine. At the time I thought they were sweet and adventurous and exciting-and they are in a very simplistic and naive way. Sweet and gooey; makes me want to eat S'mores.

Typical Barbara Cartland formula - n'er do well Marquis loves them and leaves them until he finds the sweet virtuous girl of his dreams. Decides he can't live without her and they end up marrying. I got this one for free otherwise probably wouldn't have read it.

What can I say? It was free. I think it's been about 35 years since I read a Barbara Cartland book and if it's another 35 years it will be too soon. There was no character development, no real plot, terrible dialog. Free was too expensive.

I love Barbara Cartland books. Nice historic background and a good love story.

I read this when I was a girl. I haven't read much lately and thought that a simple romantic story would be a good way to start :)
